This rare Curtiss Wright P-40K with serial number N4436J has just been offered for sale by Courtesy aircraft!
This P-40K was delivered to the Army Air Force on August 31, 1942, and first went to Great Falls AFB. On January 26, 1943, it was transferred to Elmendorf AFB, Alaska. At Adak AFB on May 12, 1945, it was condemned as “surplus,” but in 1969, collector Bob Sturges rescued its remains just before the area in which it was discovered was to be used as a nuclear test site.
The P-40 has now been restored from the ground up by Pioneer Aero from 1998 to 2000 who rebuilt the fuselage completely from behind the pilot (frame 5). Everything forward of the firewall was replaced; and the tail feathers were rebuilt, as was the cockpit interior. The wings were rebuilt as were the wingtips, flaps and ailerons.
