Our chums from Abandoned UK visited this amazing Harrier Jump Jet graveyard located somewhere in the United Kingdom.
The Harrier Jump Jet, known formally as The Harrier, is a unique class of jet fighters capable of taking off and landing vertically (V/STOL). The Harrier was developed in the U.K. by the Hawker Siddeley manufacturing company in the 1960s. Many manufacturers at the time attempted to develop V/STOL aircraft, but the Harrier was the only success story to result out of the competition despite being a subsonic aircraft, unlike most of the others that were attempted.
Now most prominently known for use and launch from aircraft carriers, the Harrier was originally conceived and developed to operate from improvised bases such as car parks and forest clearings, minimizing the need for large and vulnerable air bases.
The Harrier age came to an end in 2010 when the RAF and RN announced they would retire their remaining Harriers by 2011. In December 2010 the RAF’s Harrier GR9s made the final flights.
