In May 1940 Nazi Germany invaded Belgium, The Netherlands, Luxemburg, and France. The United Kingdom, France’s ally, had sent troops and tanks to help. But even together they could not stop the German advance. France surrendered. The British had to evacuate at Dunkirk, losing the majority of their tanks.
Britain and the Commonwealth had to build more tanks quickly. Canada found that it had to build its own, and so the Ram Cruiser was born.
The Ram Cruiser tank was produced by Montreal Locomotive Works from 1941 – 1943. It was based on the chassis of the U.S. M3 Lee medium tank. But in 1943 the United States Army replaced the M3 with the more powerful M4 Sherman tank. So Montreal Locomotive works used the M4 design for its own upgrade, the Grizzly I Cruiser, with some changes of its own.
For example, the tracks of the Grizzly did not require rubber. This was useful, as most of the countries which produced rubber had been conquered by Japan. The tracks were also lighter and simply than the U.S. Sherman. The Grizzly also had thicker sloped armour and a longer range.
Production of the Grizzly was stopped when the United States began making enough tanks for the Canadians. The Grizzly remained in service until 1945, though the Portuguese army adopted it and continued using it into the 1980s.
