Following on from Washington in “Olympus Has Fallen” and London in “London Has Fallen”, now it’s Moscow’s turn. The upcoming movie “Hunter Killer” is not a part of a series; however, once again Gerard Butler will play a president-saving hero.
On 26th October 2018, Butler will try to rescue a Russian president who has been kidnapped by a shady general. The plot probably won’t be the deepest one but who’s watching movies with the former “King Leonidas” for reflection?
“Hunter Killer” is going to be fast and full of action – something which is not easy to accomplish when filming a submarine. We all remember Tom Clancy’s “The Hunt for Red October” (1990) with Sean Connery, “Das Boot” (1981) or “U-571” (2000), but how many more can you recall?
That’s because it’s rather difficult to keep the viewer interested in such films since the service life of a submariner isn’t the most thrilling thing to watch. Generally it’s filled with interminable boredom punctuated by moments of terror. That’s why maritime action movies were rather a rare sight before the era of advanced special effects. And even with those advances, the plot still has to be intriguing if the producers hope to generate revenue.
The story line won’t be a mystery if you have read “Firing Point” by George Wallace and Don Keith. The U.S. Navy submarine under the command of Captain Joe Glass (Butler) is on a routine mission under the Arctic cap, tailing a new kind of a Russian submarine.
At one point, this game of hide-and-seek turns into a tragedy when the Russian vessel starts sinking. No country likes it when their state-of-the-art sub has been compromised, so tensions on the worldwide political scene are reaching an apogee that could lead to World War III.
The USS Toledo rushes to aid the unlucky submarine only to discover that its sinking was not an accident but the first step in a bigger plan. Rogue Admiral Alexander Durov (Michael Gor) is planning to restore the might of Soviet Union and only Captain Joe Glass can save the world…
Success does not rest only on the plot and special effects. A stellar cast can be the backbone of a box office hit, and the cast in “Hunter Killer” is going to be epic. As well as Gerard Butler (known from films such as “300”, “Law Abiding Citizen”, “Gods of Egypt”, and “Geostorm”), we will have a chance to see the talents of Gary Oldman, Billy Bob Thornton, and Common.

Will the movie be a faithful copy of the book? Not likely, as books and movies are ruled by different laws. Will it be worth watching? The author, George Wallace, was a U.S. Navy commander on nuclear subs for 22 years, while Don Keith stitched the story into a wordy masterpiece, so it was certainly a good read. We’ll definitely check the movie on October 26th. See you at the cinemas!
