To highlight the point, here is a new book from Simon Last and Michael Good. Aldeburgh in Suffolk is a fantastic place to visit and we are pleased to see a book describing the lives of many of the people whose names appear on the war memorial in this lovely seaside town perhaps best known for it’s association with the composer Benjamin Britten.
We asked Simon to give us some background into how the book came about and he tells us
Michael Good, a former Mayor of Aldeburgh began researching the WW1 names on the Aldeburgh War Memorial in 2005 and gave a talk to the Aldeburgh and District Local History Society in 2006. Sadly, shortly after, he developed Alzheimer’s and was not able to continue his work.
I had already written two books on the Framlingham War Memorial in Suffolk, which Michael’s wife Lamorna had heard about and she contacted me to see if I could in any way help to finish her husband’s work. Therefore using his work as a foundation, I managed to develop the research into a book, making many interesting connections and finding descendants of the names on the War Memorial.
The book commemorates the men and woman of Aldeburgh in Suffolk whose names are on the town War Memorial who losttheir lives in the First World War and the opening chapters focus on the start of the war and the recruiting of the men to go off and fight for their country.
The main section of the book is concerned with the story behind the names and starting with their early lives before the war it goes on to describe where they lived, their families, where they died and their place of burial or commemoration.
The final chapters describe the erection of the War Memorial, the subscribers to it and the unveiling ceremony in 1921.
