92-year-old World War II veteran Navy 2nd Class Petty Officer Burke Waldron threw out the first pitch for the Seattle Mariners as part of the team’s Memorial Day celebrations. He was a hit with the crowd as he jogged to the mound and threw an impressive pitch while in full naval uniform.
Waldron served from July 1943 to 1946. He was in both the Makin Island and Saipan invasions before he retired.
Though the Mariners dominated the San Diego Padres on the field, Waldron’s pitch was the highlight of the game.
Waldron’s was the second impressive performance by someone from the World War II generation. Hermina Hirsch, a Holocaust survivor, recently performed a beautiful version of the national anthem at a Detroit Tigers game.
