Condemnations and criticisms rained upon a Dubai-based TV network when it decided to use Germany’s Third Reich dictator in its ads to promote its action movies line-up for the month of September.
Middle East Broadcasting Center is taking the flaking from the Anti-Defamation League when it used snippets of Tarantino’s movie Inglorious Basterds as a way to promote its greatest and latest movie offerings. The ads had Hitler’s character speaking, in Arabic subtitles, the phrase:
“they will control the entire region.”
The words laud the network’s offering of action films it collectively called September to Remember.
Hitler was the German dictator and leader of the Nazi party known for the genocide he did to the Jewish populations in the lands he controlled. He invaded Poland which sparked the Second World War on September 1, 1939. he also succeeded in controlling majority of Europe until the Allied Forces put a stop to his regime in the Allied Invasion of the Normandy in June 1944.
“Perhaps someone thought all of this was funny, but one wonders how it will play across the Arab World, where there is scant education about the murder of six million Jews and millions of others by Hitler and the Nazis and where Holocaust denial and Antisemitism are rampant,” said Abraham H. Foxman, the national director of the Anti-Defamation League who lambasted the network for its “offensive and outrageous” portrayal of the dictator.
However, the TV network is not alone in using the dictator to promote whatever it is that needs promoting.
Just last year, a Turkish shampoo had featured Hitler in an ad calling all men to use the product. The said plug was removed after the public protested. Still, another ad ran by Circuit Factory for a Dubai gym showed Nazi death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau along with the slogan, “Kiss your calories goodbye.”
