Activision stated during its most recent earnings report that “Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare” failed to meet their sales expectations. They also said that it failed to “resonate” with the fans of the series. In an effort to turn their fortunes around, the company announced that it would be returning the series to its roots.
This could be interpreted as Activision retreating and turning back from the course they set out on with “Infinite Warfare” but anything that Activision comes out with this year must have been started two years ago. Whatever the reason, Activision is telling fans that they have learned the lessons they needed to learn from the experience.
While admitting that “Infinite Warfare” was not the success that they had hoped for, Activision says that they have been protective of one of the company’s core tenets – “empowering our talented teams to have the chance to pursue opportunities that they are passionate about.” Activision feels that is a key component to the success of the company and being able to learn from their mistakes while protecting that culture makes their company special, gamesradar reported.
Sledgehammer Games is the studio that is next in line to work on the franchise series. They sent a New Years tweet that included clockwork gears and sent fans into a hyper-speculative mode. This week, the head of the studio, Glen Schofield, tweeted that it isn’t time to talk about what they are working on yet but claims that they “listened.”
If they are truly going back to their roots, Activision will be bringing out a new WWII-themed CoD game. If they are speaking figuratively, then all bets are off.
