Canada: Local Historians Uncover Victoria’s Secret WWI History

Victoria, British Columbia, Canada – A team of archeologists and local historians in Victoria in Vancouver Island sought to uncover the place’s WWI history which most of its locals did not know.  The team turned heads in the Dallas Road Waterfront Sunday, November 9, as they brought about electronic gadgets measuring land in the area.

According to them, the electrical instruments are used to peer beneath the soil. They are trying to map out a series of trenches dug up by troops between the years 1915 and 1918. These said trenches were used to train the servicemen before they were shipped out to France during the First World War. The team added that sadly, Victoria residents never knew they have an existent piece of WWI history just right within their area.

The group showed several archived photos to prove the existence of the said WWI training trenches. They stated that by mapping the exact location of the trenches, they will be able to give the locals a sense of he city’s WWI history.

As amateur historian Simon Sobolewski stated, the trenches are what they called “Victoria’s lost WWI history”. He went on to point out that those who live along the vicinity of the trenches did not know that such piece of history existed. The team’s end goal, according to him, is to able to build a demonstration trench for school children. In this way, locals will be made aware of the city’s local WWI history.
