The remains of Marine Corps Pfc. James O. Whitehurst were escorted from Tallahassee, Florida to Dothan, Alabama, his hometown. Accompanying Whitehurst recently was his surviving family, members of the Patriot Guard Riders and law enforcement agents from both Florida and Alabama.
Whitehurst died while fighting in World War II on November 20, 1943. His remains were flown from Hawaii to Tallahassee, after which they were escorted to Dothan.
Whitehurst’s remains were delivered to Glover Funeral Home to be prepared for the funeral with full military honors.
The funeral was held at First Baptist Church of Cowarts on Glen Lawrence Road, WXTL reported.
Sheriff Roberts and other officers from the Jackson County Sheriff’s office met the procession on I-10 at the county line. They escorted Whitehurst’s remains on Highway 71, north on Highway 90 through Marianna and then Highway 73 north to 231 on to Dothan.
