In Remembrance: The Freedom Trail Across the Pyrenees is done in honor of the Pyrenees trail which was used as an escape route during the Second World War. The show consists of a presentation and slides by Major Charles Wilson.
The Freedom Trail, known as Chemin de la Liberté, is a series of hazardous mountain tracks running through the Pyrenees, the mountain range which forms a natural border between the countries of France and Spain. During the Second World War, it was one of the toughest escape paths from Nazi-occupied France into Spain. Nevertheless, thousands of Allied servicemen and Jewish refugees were able to pass through the trail in the Pyrenees with the help of the locals.
These Pyrenees tracks were guarded by the Germans during the war. So, escapees often did their breakaways during the night. But the dark didn’t lessen the place’s hostile levels. Aside from the soldiers guarding the path, this escape route is hilly riddled with rocky ridges that making the walk arduous. Many may have been fortunate enough to escape successfully. But many also lost their lives in the process.
The Freedom Trail in the Pyrenees is now known as the Journey of Remembrance. Wholly organized by the French, the trail in Pyrenees, which once catered to escapees wanting to break away from the hold of the Nazis are now filled with monuments throughout their stretch in remembrance of those who got killed along its stretch.
Admission for the show this Saturday is £7, inclusive of a light supper, to be paid at the door. All the proceeds coming from this said presentation of The Freedom Trail in the Pyrenees will benefit the Poppy Appeal.
