Sons in Retirement Honors Veterans

The Modesto Bee reports that on January 15, 2014, the Sons in Retirement Turlock 3143 will be hosting an event in the Denair Community Center. The event will be honoring 19 World War II veterans.

The honorees range from 86 years old to 94. Each of the gentlemen will receive a WWII Patriot Medallion by the representatives of the Non-Commissioned Officers Association. The representatives include Johnny Alves, Army; Rex Andersen, Navy; Christian Baird, Army; Norman Biedler, Army; Ed Coleman, Navy; Clifford Dick, Navy; Chuck Dohn, Navy; Jim Hapgood, Navy; Carl Hilberg, USAF; Dick Laughlin, Navy; H.J. Bud Leam, USAF; Joe Oppelt, Army; John Parkinson, Army; Wesley Peterson, Army Air; David Sargis, Navy; George Tallman, Navy; Miles Twaddell, Navy; Dick Weaver, Navy; and Bill Youngdale; Merchant Marine. Family and Friends of the honorees are welcomed to attend the event.

El Pollo Loco franchise owner Rafael Armenta, seen in 2004, is being recognized for returning $2,200 to a man who had lost his wallet in an El Pollo Loco parking lot in Manteca.

Armenta Jr. made good on the man’s loss and bought him lunch as well.

Born in Mexico, Armenta immigrated to America and began working for El Pollo Loco. He and his wife, Bertha, own eight of the company’s franchises in Merced, Turlock, Modesto and Stockton.
