Columbus, Indiana – A WWII hand grenade was found by a maintenance worker at the Four Seasons Retirement Center in Columbus Tuesday, March 3. It was immediately recovered by the area’s police authorities.
According to police reports, the said worker was cleaning out a cardboard box which belonged to one of the senior home’s residents who recently passed away when he discovered the WWII hand grenade. The said resident had been a World War Two military veteran.
As a matter of fact, the family of the unnamed senior home householder confirmed that he took part in the Battle of Iwo Jima and even got injured.
Sergeant Matt Harris, who spoke for the Columbus police, said that it is not unusual for WWII vets and even Korean vets to bring home mementos in forms of relics and other stuff from the battlefield. He added that they do get calls informing them about the discovery of vintage explosives from time to time.
He even advised those who come across stuffs like this to promptly call the police or local law enforcement just to “air on the side of safety”.
A Columbus Police Department Hazardous Devices Unit officer was brought to the scene and was the one who secured the WWII hand grenade.
