The Channel Islands were amongst the most heavily fortified parts of the Atlantic Wall. On 20 October 1941, Hitler signed a directive which was to turn the Channel Islands into an “impregnable fortress”.
During 1942, one-twelfth of the resources funnelled into the whole Atlantic Wall was used building the fortifications of the Channel Islands. Adolf Hitler had decreed that at least 10% of the steel and concrete used in the Atlantic Wall was to go to the Channel Islands. By 1944 in tunnelling 244,000 m3 of rock had been extracted collectively from Jersey, Guernsey and Alderney.
The video shows the unique five-story naval observation tower was built and used by German forces from 1942 to 1945, as part of their sea defence system during their occupation of Guernsey in World War Two.
The original rangefinders are still onsite and are in working order, which is very rare indeed.
This drone footage shows the observation towers and it’s a very impressive sight!
