This is a collection of some rare and seldom seen First World War footage. See German soldiers march through the Brandenburger gate in Berlin, confident that the war will be short and they will be victorious. They say goodbye to their loved ones as they get aboard troop trains that will take them to the front, a sad sight since very few of these men will ever return home.
Also of note, at 1:18, you will see the Feldhernhalle in Munchen where, roughly a decade later, Hitler’s Beer hall putch (coup) would meet it’s bloody end.
Visit the front lines in color, watch the trenches as the men saw them and see the destruction caused by intense artillery fire.
This amazing footage brings color into a world we have only known to be in black and white. This color seems to make the men more real and less of a distant memory.
Somehow that only makes us more sad, just like the statistics that the video ends with.
