The acclaimed book “History on Trial: My Day in Court with a Holocaust Denier,” has been made into a film. The film, DENIAL, recounts Deborah E. Lipstadt’s (played by Academy Award® winner Rachel Weisz) legal battle for historical truth against David Irving (BAFTA nominee Timothy Spall). She accused him of being a Holocaust denier, and he took court action against her for libel. In English law, the burden of proof rests of the defendant in libel cases so Lipstadt, along with her legal team, led by Richard Rampton (Academy Award® nominee Tom Wilkinson), had to prove that the Holocaust occurred.
This new trailer doesn’t back away from the substance, it opens with a scene in which Holocaust denier David Irving (played by Timothy Spall), lobs the first verbal grenade during a presentation: “I say to you, quite tastelessly, that more women died on the backseat of Senator Edward Kennedy’s car at Chappaquiddick than ever died in a gas chamber at Auschwitz.”
The appalling claim sets the serious tone for Denial, in the film, Lipstadt (played by Rachel Weisz), who, due to the intricacies of the British legal system, must prove in court that the Holocaust in general and the Auschwitz’s gas chambers in particular— existed.
