The story of the battles in the Pacific between the United States and Imperial Japan during World War II, as told from the perspective of the people who fought it.
The Pacific War during the Second World War was fought in the vast area of the Pacific and in East Asia, South-East Asia, and China. The war raged from December 7, 1941 (the date of the infamous Pearl Harbor attacks) until 2 September 1945, when Japan’s surrender signaled the end of the Second World War.
The Pacific War lasted for 3 years, 8 months, 3 weeks and 5 days, and by its end, it had claimed in the region of 36 million lives, around half of the total casualties of the Second World War. As in other theaters of WW2, civilian casualties were enormous.
Battles were fought on land, on the sea, and in the air. As in other theatres, the modern technology available made the capturing of strategic areas incredibly costly. Before the end of the campaign, many brutal battles had been fought, and the suffering was great on all sides.
This four-part documentary is an astonishing four-part examination of these terrible battles. We have collected all four parts together for your convenience.
There is nothing gung-ho here: it is terrible, horrific, sad, honest and utterly beautiful. As the title says, this war was hell. This is an extremely humane look at the very depths of the 20th century’s horror story.
