So you know your World War II History inside out? We challenge you to take our quiz and answer all 20 questions correctly.
We all (should) know the history of World War II, if not in detail then at the very least in broad terms. Basically, it was Germany and Japan that took on the rest of the world in a bid for world domination. Japan started in the early 1930s with their invasion of China, and which Adolf Hitler followed suit in Europe later that decade.
The invasion of Poland is what marked the beginning of World War II in most history books, and the battle there didn’t last long, with Soviet Russia joining the fight on the Nazi side and taking the eastern part of Poland.
Germany was then free to move on the west which it did in the spring of 1940, taking almost all of Western Europe in a series of victories that shook the world. Britain was next on the list of Adolf
Hitler but then the fortunes of war turned against the Nazis for the first time.
In June 1941 Germany attacked the Soviet union which was on the brink of defeat when winter set in saving them for the time being. After two more years of heavy fighting, the Red Army started to push the Germans back to Berlin.
After a number of amphibious assaults in North Africa and Italy, the western allies landed in Normandy on June 6th, 1944 and started their advance on Berlin too.
In the Pacific, on December 7th, 1941, the Japanese Navy launched an attack on Pearl Harbor with the goal of crippling the American fleet at anchor there. At the same time, Japanese forces attacked multiple targets in Asia, trying to secure a new empire before the USA would be able to strike back.
Their idea was to secure such a strong position that the Americans would have no other option than to negotiate peace. This plan looked to be successful until the battle of Midway in which the Americans not only stopped the Japanese plans but also sank four carriers.
This was more than Japan could bear and from that moment on they were on the defensive.
There is no need to tell you how the war ended, you know that already.
